Chiropractic Care FAQs

Is chiropractic care safe?

Yes, chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasiveinterventions available for neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Dr. Bastable utilizes a variety of gentle, trauma-informed approaches tailored to your comfort and body's specific needs.

What should I expect during my first session?

Your first visit involves a comprehensive consultation, history intake, and examination where Dr. Bastable discusses your health history, past/current injuries and health goals. She performs a thorough physical exam to understand your structural needs before proceeding with any adjustments, ensuring you feel safe and informed every step of the way.

Does the adjustment hurt?

Adjustments are crafted to be painless, gently easing you into a state of relaxation. Dr. Bastable uses subtle techniques to prioritize your comfort, explaining every detail of the process so you feel informed, safe, and truly at ease.

How often should I come in for care?

Frequency varies based on your unique health goals and nervous system regulation needs. Some benefit from weekly sessions initially to stabilize alignment, while others shift to monthly maintenance to foster long-term physical and emotional equilibrium.

Somatic Breathwork Therapy FAQs

What is Reichian Somatic breathwork?

Somatic breathwork is a gentle, body-centered therapy that uses specific breathing patterns to help release stored tension and emotional blockages. Unlike traditional talk therapy, it focuses on the chronic physical tension (armoring) and sensations in your body, allowing your nervous system to process and discharge stress that may be stuck in your tissues. This type of therapeutic approach is complemented well by chiropractic care and psychotherapy.

What does a typical session feel like?

Sessions are held in a calm, private, safe, and sound-proof environment. Participants lay on a supportive cushion with their therapist next to them for guidance and observation. Wearing loose fitting clothing allows movement in the body without restricting breathing. Participants are guided through various breathing patterns and movements that might lead to physical sensations like tingling, warmth, sweating, or subtle muscular movements. It is encouraged to express intentional vocalizations which often leads to brief emotional reliefs such as sighing, crying, or shouting. There can be periods of temporary tension in the musculature. At the end of a session, participants rest quietly and receive craniosacral therapy. Each participant is given a period of time for integration prior to leaving the office to go on with their day.

When Reichian-style breathwork might be a good fit

  • Feel chronically tense or “held” in your body

  • Want to work on emotional expression in a grounded way

  • Prefer slower, more relational guidance over intense peak experiences

  • Are interested in how posture, breath, and emotions are connected

Some of the benefits —like feeling freer, more pleasure, better connection—are very possible, but they usually come gradually with consistent work, not from a single session. And occasionally, sessions can bring up discomfort before things feel lighter.

How should I prepare for my first session?

It is recommended to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and bringing a bottle of water. It is best to avoid heavy meals and caffeine for two hours prior to a session. Schedule your session with adequate time to rest before doing activities that require moderate mental or physical demand. Most importantly, know that this is a trauma-informed space where your pace is respected; there is nothing you need to accomplish, only a safe space to simply be and breathe.
